MXI’s HHW Processing Facility (1st Location – 10:00 AM MXI’s HHW Processing Facility: 26319 Old Trail Rd. Abingdon, VA 24210): MXI’s facility for managing non-latex HHW materials. This is where MXI receives almost all materials from its HHW collection events on the east coast. Materials are unloaded, run through QA/QC, stored by hazard, and then processed in the appropriate areas. Materials processed include aerosol cans, fire extinguishers, flammable paints and paint related materials, toxics such as pesticides, corrosives such as cleaners, pool chemicals, batteries, and more. A tour of this facility will give one a better understanding of how HHW materials are managed once collected.
MXI’s Latex Recycling Facility (2nd Location – 11:15 AM MXI’s Latex Recycling Facility: 290 Stone Mill Rd. Abingdon, VA 24210): MXI’s facility for managing latex paint to be recycled. Most material collected at HHW events is paint; most of this collected paint is latex paint. This facility allows MXI to cost effectively manage the biggest HHW “waste stream” as a recycled material rather than a waste product. A tour of this facility will give insight as to how MXI is diverting the largest HHW “waste stream” into a recycled product.
